I originally came from NYC and then moved to upstate NY, then Scranton and finally ended up in San Diego until three years ago when I moved to Buckeye, AZ.I feel your pain regarding the cold weather. The heat is on all the time, your skin gets very dry and it s just a royal pain to walk out and get the mail. I ll take the extreme heat any day. During the summer here I have played over 100 rounds of golf in 110+ temperatures. You just bring ice water, wet towels and six bottles of water to drink. It s fun, especially since summer golf prices are so cheap. Winter rates are $129 at one PGA course and only $29 during summer. Another is $89 vs $16.00 with $6 replays offered.I told you in a sidebar email about the real estate prices.As for family, maybe they re still there because they had no reason to leave. With you and Mr. T in Arizona maybe this will give them a reason to leave Ohio.One thing I find funny is that with the Hispanic influence here I still have not had a good Mexican dinner like I used to have in San Diego. We went to ON THE BORDER lastnight in Goodyear and on a scale of 1-10 it was only a 5. Other than the Mexican food, I would say land a job first, move here and rent a place to learn the area and then buy if the price is right.
phoenix is great- ireally miss it and mow live in dayton of all places. the summers get pretty hot, but people who live out there treat that as their winter (minus the shoveling and hazardous roads- they do more indoor activities, etc. but it s bearable unless you work outdoors. an acceptable tradeoff to be able to lay by the pool in february. there are so many reasons that phoenix is better than toledo- jobs and growth included.
YES! people from Michigan seem to love Phoenix. I know a handful of people here and they are from areas like Kalamazoo and Lancing and call Phx home now. They ll never move back. There s a lot of opportuinity here in this huge city. We have no snow blizzards, bad humidity, huge bugs, earth quakes or tornados........just HOT summers.

The problem with Phoenix is that a lot of companies set up offices there but when the economy crashed they closed them up. If you already have a job offer then it s not a bad idea but if you are hoping to show up and get a job you might want to reconsider.Phoenix is very hot in the summer, around 110f and above during the summer. It does get cold in the winter, the night time temperature can drop into the 20 s f, that may not seem bad compared to Ohio but once you live there a while you will be cold. Also there are not a lot of trees, rain comes in monsoons and then is gone, and the wind blows so hard they have brownouts, where the dust is so heavy in the air you can t see across the street.Also you will have to prepare yourself for the culture shock. Even though there has been a huge influx of Anglos over the past 30 years the basis of the culture is still Hispanic. Spanish is spoken as often as English. My suggestion is that if you aren t moving right away for a job you take a vacation to the area, at the least a 4 day trip. Look around and see what you think.
Some of the info above I disagree with.You ll love Phoenix. Yes, it does get hot in the summer but we have something called air conditioning. Due to air conditioning, our summers are not unbearable. We run from our air conditioned homes to our air conditioned cars to the air conditioned stores and buildings - ha. You will become acclimated to the heat. Just remember to drink of lots of water and apply sunscreen every day - not just when going swimming. The location of your home here in Phoenix should be determined by your job location - traffic commutes can be miserable as we are the 5th largest city in the US. We moved here from VA and do not miss the snow and ice at all. If you do get a yearning for the four seasons we are only a two drive from Flagstaff with autumn colored leaves, snow and even a snow ski resort. I have relatives in Ohio and often see them as winter guests - ha! They ll love our winters.
